A new controversy has surfaced in New Delhi after a US commission’s report mentioned Pakistan gaining military advantage over India, triggering sharp political reactions at home.
US Report Sparks Political Outrage in India
The Congress party on Thursday called the latest US-China Economic and Security Review Commission report a serious blow to India’s diplomatic standing. The concern arose after the document reportedly referred to Pakistan achieving military gains over India during a four-day confrontation earlier this year. The party questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of External Affairs would formally challenge the claims made in the report.
Congress Questions PM’s Silence
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the government for not responding to repeated statements made by former US President Donald Trump, who has claimed numerous times that he intervened to stop what he described as Operation Sindoor. Ramesh said that despite these remarks being made on multiple occasions, the prime minister has not addressed them publicly.

Details of the US Commission Report
Ramesh pointed out that the newly submitted annual report from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission runs nearly 800 pages. According to screenshots shared by him, the document categorises the April 2025 Pahalgam incident that killed 26 civilians as an insurgent attack, allegedly backed by Pakistan. The report also mentions the subsequent clash between Indian and Pakistani forces from May 7 to May 10.
Reference to Pakistan’s Claimed Advantage
One striking element in the report is the section describing Pakistan achieving a military edge during the four-day confrontation. The narrative suggests that Pakistan’s forces relied heavily on Chinese equipment and intelligence. It further notes that both India and Pakistan targeted deeper locations within each other’s territories than at any time in the past five decades.
China’s Strategic Role in the Conflict
The report also discusses China’s involvement, stating that Beijing used the situation to highlight the capabilities of its weapons systems. The commission observes that although calling the incident a proxy war may be an exaggeration, China still viewed the clash as an opportunity to advance its defence ambitions and gather insights relevant to its border tensions with India.

Congress Flags Diplomatic Concerns
Ramesh argued that the findings were unacceptable from India’s perspective and indicated a failure of diplomacy. He urged the government to lodge a formal objection and make India’s position clear at the international level. According to him, the continued silence from the country’s leadership only deepens the diplomatic challenges.
